Study alongside UAL undergraduates for 1, 2 or 3 terms and fully integrate into a BA course and UK student life.

Much of your time will be spent on self-directed study and you will need to adapt quickly to a style of teaching and learning that might be quite different to what you are used to. Be prepared to take part in live projects and gain real insights into your work.

It’s tough to pick my one favourite part of studying abroad here! The programme was great and challenging, I’ve been able to visit a different museum every week, and I’ve loved meeting my classmates, they were so welcoming.

You will take classes in 1 subject area in order to fully develop your specialist technical skills and the ability to explore and build on your own ideas, skills that are required for a career in professional artistic practice and the creative industries.

See below for the range of courses available.

Before you apply, the Study Abroad team at UAL can send you a course handbook containing detailed information on the curriculum and classes for the degree course you would like to join. Many students find it useful to have a copy of the course handbook when they meet with their academic advisors at home.

Your course director at UAL will assign you a programme of classes during your first meeting in London.

Optional modules

Students joining an integrated Study Abroad programme can experience life in another UAL College by taking the following modules at the start of the autumn term or end of the spring term.

Creative Industries London

This 3-week course, based at London College of Communication, will introduce you to contemporary communications practices here in London, with visits to creative hubs around the city.

European Art History

This intensive 3-week course, based at Chelsea College of Arts, will take you on a guided tour of the art, history, environment and cultures of 2 of Europe's most exciting cities, and includes a 4-day tutor-led trip to Berlin.

All degree courses at UAL are credit rated. Students earn credit points when they successfully complete a learning unit. Each individual credit point normally equates to 10 hours of learning across 2 areas:

  • taught or tutor-directed learning
  • self-directed study with access to College facilities.

Assessments might include project work, your log and written assignments, and other work as appropriate.

Study Abroad students can take classes for their home institution to award external credit. 120 credits are available for each year of study and this typically breaks down into 40 credits per term. At the end of your course, we will provide a record of study listing the grades you have achieved for each unit and their equivalent US credit value.

Please make sure your home institution will award external credit before you travel to London. The Study Abroad team can provide course handbooks to give you and your advisor a clear idea of what you will be studying in London.
