MODUAL 4 (July 2016) – Somerset House

Open Call for Participants for Modual: The Collaborative Digital Workshop. UAL PG Students are invited to take part in UAL’s collaborative digital workshop Modual which is FREE for UAL students and running on Thursday 30 June and Monday 4 July to Friday 15 July 2016.

Deadline to apply: Friday 10 June 2016

1: What is this workshop?

This workshop is a chance for you to experience working in a small team of students from all UAL colleges and courses on a project that you will imagine, create, develop and then pitch to an audience of industry professionals, staff and other students.

You will discover what it is like to work in a professional studio environment using the latest digital methods and tools. Various experts will give lectures, coach you and give you specific feedback on your projects. The workshop is led by UAL’s Chair of Interactive Digital Arts, Professor Fred Deakin.

2: What is the experience like?

The best way to understand the experience is to watch this film about the last workshop or visit the Modual website.

This workshop takes place over two weeks from Monday 04 July to Friday 15 July 2016 from 10am to 5pm every day except Saturday and Sunday. There is also a compulsory briefing event on Thursday 30 June 2016 from 2pm to 6pm at Somerset House in central London where you will be given more details and can ask other questions you might have.

We will be working both online and in the real world. You will be given digital tools at the briefing session to help you participate remotely, you will also be attending sessions at Somerset House as well as meeting up with your project teams in college and elsewhere.

3: What kind of projects will we be working on?

This is entirely up to you, the final projects will be selected from ideas developed by you and other students during the workshop.

We will be suggesting areas to explore, such as digital innovation and positive social change, but everyone will get to choose the projects that they work on, selecting them from a range of ideas that they have generated together.

4: Why is this worth doing?

If you want a career in the creative industries you will need to be part of a team of people with very different skills from yours. You will also need to work at a fast pace and be able to find solutions quickly.

It is also very powerful to collaborate with your friends and peers to develop your own projects and work like a 'start-up'. Exploring this way of working could lead to you launching your own studio or company rather than being employed by somebody else. Finally, if you want to create your own future you need to be able to develop innovative projects in the digital space.

These are all skills that your UAL course is already teaching you, taking part in Modual is a chance to test them in a safe environment and develop them further.

5: How do I take part?

If you would like to take part in Modual’s July 2016 workshop, first be completely sure that you are available. Like industry, this workshop is a full time commitment, we work all day 10am to 5pm (except for breaks and lunch) for two weeks from Monday 04 July to Friday 15 July 2016 (not Saturday or Sunday). If you are not available on any of these days then sorry, but you cannot take part in this workshop.

You will also need to commit to attending the briefing session at Somerset House on Thursday 30 June 2016 from 2pm to 6pm. Attendance for this session is compulsory, again if you can't make this then you cannot take part in this workshop.

Once you are sure that you are available, please fill in the application form here as soon as possible to maximize your chance of a place. No applications will be considered after Friday 10 June 2016.

We will let you know whether you have been accepted as soon as possible and definitely by Friday 17 June 2016. If you have been given a place we will then be in touch to talk you through the workshop in more detail and answer any questions you may have.
