This shoe design course will immerse you in the world of footwear design, and provide you with an introduction to designing for the footwear market. We'll address the tricky challenge of designing footwear that's not only practical but fashionable also. Through practical exercises and focused discussions, you'll really get under the skin of the footwear design process.
The course includes:
- How to develop your design ideas
- Visual communication and illustration skills through traditional skills and digital design
- Design development process
- Story/mood boards
- Range building
- Decoding trends and fashion predictions
Drawing and presentation will be covered in a series of technical workshops. This is a design course and doesn't involve footwear construction. In order to get the most out of the course, some independent study outside of the course hours may be required.
Beginners. You should have an interest in the subject area and a desire to learn but no previous experience is required.
Your course place is confirmed once you have booked online or via the phone using a credit or debit card. There is no deadline for booking. Places are offered on a first come, first served basis, and all courses have a maximum number of students. We suggest you book early to avoid disappointment.
London College of Fashion joined forces with the world-renowned Cordwainers College in 2000, forming a union of unique specialist expertise in footwear and accessories. This collaboration has broadened LCF’s portfolio of specialist courses and since its formation has trained some of London’s most interesting shoe designers.
In order to fully participate in the practical exercises please bring the following materials/equipment to the first class:
- A4 Layout pad (80 sheets of 45gsm by Daler Rowney or equivalent)
- A5 sketchbook (140gsm cartridge paper seawhite starter sketchbook or equivalent)
- Sketching pencils (HB, B, 2B such as Derwent Graphic)
- Staedtler 0.3mm black fine liner pen
- USB stick
- Light grey or beige tombow pen (optional)
- Coloured prints from the internet or magazines of a subject that interests you to use as a theme for your design inspiration and your favourite shoe
We recommend that you buy your materials from an art shop. As part of your research you will be required to do some printing. Please bring a small amount of cash to the course on your first day to credit your printing account. It is unlikely you will need to spend more than £5.
